Boyd schools finished the academic year Thursday. When students return in August, they will be joined on campus by Boyd officer Jason Morris.

The officer, who has been with the department for a year, was named the school resource officer last week after earning the approval of school officials and Boyd Police Chief Dwayne Taylor.

“We’ll send him through a certification course before the start of school,” Taylor said. “He’ll be ready for the first day of school.”

Morris has been an officer for more than 12 years. This will be his first job as a school resource officer.

Taylor admitted at first he didn’t want to take Morris off the street. When he asked to transfer to the spot, Taylor said he couldn’t refuse.

“I didn’t want to lose a valuable asset on the street,” Taylor said. “He talked about it with his wife and wanted to transfer over. He met with [Boyd ISD Superintendent] Ted [West] and them, and they quickly said this is the person we want.”

West said he and the other Boyd ISD administrators were impressed with Morris.

“He’s exactly what we were looking for,” West said. “He has kids that go to school here. He has a wealth of experience and the qualities we were looking for in a SRO. He’ll be able to form relationships with kids.”
