An Aurora couple’s home was destroyed by fire Thursday night.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Newark, Boyd and Rhome fire departments were called to a mobile home at 403 Circle Del Rio Drive.

Newark Fire Chief Jerry Taylor said when his crew arrived there was heavy fire on the back side of the house, and flames were shooting over the roof.

“We got hold of it and stopped it pretty quick,” Taylor said. He added that Newark and Boyd fire departments arrived on scene at the same time, which helped them get control of the blaze quickly.

“To have that much fire and the wind blowing like it is, it’s amazing the structure is still standing,” Taylor said.

The residents, George and Cynthia Johnson, escaped without injury, but their cat was missing.

The couple called 911 when they saw smoke billowing from around the refrigerator, according to Taylor. Wise County Assistant Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty said the fire remains under investigation, but an electrical issue likely caused the blaze.

In addition to Newark, Boyd and Rhome fire departments, Wise County medics were called to the scene. Haslet Fire Department was on standby at the Newark Fire Hall to help cover the district and offer mutual aid if needed.

Taylor said the Johnsons declined Red Cross assistance because other family members live nearby.
