A Bridgeport man accused of shooting and killing another Bridgeport resident in February has been indicted for murder.

Johnny Ray Armstrong

A Wise County grand jury indicted 37-year-old Johnny Ray Armstrong for the first degree felony offense May 17. Investigators say Armstrong shot 20-year-old Ruben Dunlap in the head on the evening of Feb. 28 at Armstrong’s home in the 1500 block of Brush Street in Bridgeport.

Dunlap was taken to Medical City Denton where he died after being taken off life support the following day.

Armstrong fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle, which was later found abandoned near Chico. He was spotted the next day at the Alvord Truck Stop and was arrested.

The indictment alleges that Armstrong used a handgun to shoot Dunlap.

Armstrong has remained in the Wise County Jail since his arrest with bond set at $175,000. He is represented by Denton attorney David Holmes, according to court records.

His case is set for arraignment June 4 in 271st District Court in Decatur.
