Alvord ISD has become the first school in the county to approve a plan that will allow certain teachers to carry firearms in the classrooms.

The school board on Thursday approved a 3-level Guardian program.

In a memo to staff Friday morning, Superintendent Randy Brown explained the first level, which will include all staff members, will include training on lockdown procedures, classroom preparation and basic emergency medical skills. Level 2 Guardians will include staff members who volunteer to receive training on the storage, handling and use of pepper spray.

Level 3 Guardians who will be authorized to have firearms on campus will require “an extensive screening process” that will include psychological and emotional evaluations, mandatory firearms training and board approval, according to the memo.

While the new policy takes effect immediately, the program will not begin until the 2018-2019 school year.

More information about the plan will be featured in next week’s All Around Wise.
