Vote

#1: GO TO THE POLLS

The 2018 primary election is Tuesday.

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., so make your voice heard. There are several contested local races and statewide contests that will be decided.

After the polls close, drop by the Messenger Watch Party to see the results roll in. Our office is at 115 S. Trinity St., and doors open at 7 p.m. There will be light refreshments.

Walk

#2: THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN’ …

Walk Across Texas, an eight-week program that encourages people to get up and get moving, starts Monday.

The program is simple, free and safe. All you need is a team of eight people, with one person being designated as the team captain. The team who walks farthest “across Texas” will win.

But don’t get your hopes up – the Mighty Mess is going to trounce the competition. (We’re stretching and warming up at this very moment.)

There is a consolation prize, though. It’s no trophy, but everyone who participates will take home a healthy habit.

The program is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. To sign up, call the Wise County office at 940-627-3341 or go to walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu.

It’s time to ditch the couch potato life, step out and try something new.

Basketball

#3: MAD ABOUT HOOPS

The Northwest Texans advanced to the regional tournament in Snyder for the second straight season. Northwest took on Canyon Randall Friday. If the Texans win, they will play the winner of Fort Worth Wyatt and Amarillo in the 5A Region I final with a trip to the state finals on the line.

Northwest lost to Fort Bend Marshall in the state semifinals last year.

Elsewhere, college basketball is heating up. Teams around the NCAA will compete in their conference tournaments throughout the next week, hoping to earn a berth in the big dance. Selection Sunday is March 11, when the full March Madness bracket will be released and productivity around many offices ceases.

Spring Break

#4: SPRING BREAK EVE

Boyd and Decatur ISDs scheduled a bad weather day or staff development day March 9, which means spring break starts early for these students. (Genius idea!)

Our condolences to students and teachers in Alvord, Bridgeport, Chico, Paradise, Northwest and Slidell ISDs. You have to wait until the weekend to start your spring break festivities.

Oscars

#5: THE OSCAR GOES TO…

We are serious cinephiles in the newsroom, if you can’t tell by our weekly newsroom polls.

Many of us will be glued to the TV Sunday night to see who walks away with the big awards for Best Actor and Actress and, of course, Best Picture among the nine nominated.

After all the red carpet shows, the 90th Academy Awards show starts at 7 p.m. on ABC. There’s still some time to do some serious last-minute binging to get ready.
