The holiday that often gets steamrolled by Christmas is upon us. Thanksgiving is Thursday. Families will gather for celebrations, both large and small, to express gratitude and spend meaningful time together. Because it’s easy to get distracted, and even disconnected, in today’s world, there’s something to be said for “counting your blessings.”

Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey Trot

For the first time, runners can participate in a turkey trot right here in Wise County. The event, put on by Decatur Town Square, starts with a 1-mile race at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, followed by a 5K at 8:30. Both races will start and finish at the corner of Main and State streets.

Cost is $25, and proceeds benefit Raquel’s Wings for Life, a non-profit agency that flies cancer patients for free to MD Anderson in Houston.

Registration is the day of the event, and T-shirts will be available on a first come, first served basis.

School Holiday

Parents, prepare now. Your kids will be out of school all next week.

Sure, you’ll be busy at least a couple of days with Thanksgiving festivities, but know there will be hours to fill where boredom threatens to take over the household.

Suggestions: plan game nights, watch a movie as a family, have them help prepare the Thanksgiving meal or run off some of that energy at the turkey trot.

Wise Area Relief Mission will have its annual turkey giveaway Tuesday. If you need food for your family, plan to arrive early. They start handing out turkeys at 9 a.m., but the line forms much earlier.

Those receiving turkeys must have their pantry-issued food cards, and if you have never been to WARM or have not been in the last year, you must bring a current piece of mail to receive a bird.

Black Friday

Thanksgiving and Black Friday seem to go hand in hand these days. Many people have incorporated the kickoff of the holiday shopping season into their turkey day celebrations. They clear the table and begin devising a gameplan to secure big ticket items for rock bottom prices.

When mapping your spending extravaganza, remember to shop local, too. Decatur has Lucky 7 sales on Black Friday with shops open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., all with different promotions and goodies. Shops in Bridgeport will also have a flurry of deals and special sales.
