Sirius

#1: SLOGGING THROUGH SUMMER

You’re sweating in all the places, the pool feels like bath water and your air conditioner is in overdrive. It’s officially the Dog Days of summer.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Dog Days are traditionally 40 days – July 3-Aug. 11 – which coincides with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star.

In ancient Egypt, Sirius’ first appearance on the eastern horizon marked the Nile River flood, a welcome event because it brought rich soil needed to grow crops, but the ancient Greeks and Romans were not thrilled by the appearance of Sirius. They believed it brought evil to their lands with drought, disease and discomfort. Throw in some fireworks, and it sounds a little like Wise County these days.

Market

#2: TO MARKET, TO MARKET

Wise County Market Days is coming to Bridgeport.

Located at the corner of 12th and Halsell Streets, it will be open 5 to 9 p.m. July 13.

It will feature fresh produce, free range eggs, local raised beef and lamb, local honey, jelly and jams, plus baked goods and pickles. It’s a full meal deal. Check it out!

Color run

#3: AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW

Wise County 4-H’s Run for the Clovers Color Run is July 14 at McCarroll Middle School.

The event will include a 5K and 1-mile family fun run, both with multiple color stations promising a rainbow-dipped finish.

The 5K starts at 7:30 a.m., and the 1-mile at 8. Proceeds benefit local charities.

Therapy dog

#4: FOUR-LEGGED AUDIENCE

Dogs are the best listeners, especially Honey and Ava. The certified therapy dogs, along with handler Katherine Prado, will be at Rhome Public Library July 11 for individual reading sessions with children. The canines provide a stress-free, relaxing environment in which kids can practice reading.

To make an appointment (each one is 15 minutes), call 817-636-2767. The library is at 265 West B.C. Rhome Avenue.

Painting party

#5: LOOKING TO ESCAPE THE HEAT?

Truck on over to Blessed Bru, inside Sagebrush Cafe, in Bridgeport for a paint party July 9. Wendy’s Mobile Painting Parties will provide all the supplies for you to paint Petunia the Pig with your choice of color background.

The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost to paint is $30, but bring some extra cash for coffee and pastries.
