Reunion

#1 BREAK OUT THE SOLO CUPS

The Wise County Old Settlers Reunion is next week – July 23-28 – at Joe Wheeler Park. There will be nightly entertainment at the pavilion, including bingo (Monday) and the Decatur Chamber of Commerce’s annual Put Yo Money Where Yo Mouth Is Washer Tournament (Tuesday). Musical acts draw crowds to the dance floor every night, and the kids can spin themselves silly on the midway. Now, you’re probably going to sweat, but don’t let record-setting heat ruin your Reunion escapades.

Joe Wheeler Park is on Farm Road 51 South in Decatur.

Bport Pool

#2 JUST KEEP SWIMMING

Bridgeport Parks and Rec has your back. They’re keeping the city pool open late Friday for an after-dark swim. From noon to 11 p.m., you can swim … and then swim some more.

For the price of admission, this is the most bang for your buck in the midst of a torrid summer.

Artist

#3 AN ARTISTIC LOOK AT WISE

The artwork of Byron Watson will be showcased next week in Reflections on Wise County: A Contemporary Perspective at the Decatur Visitors Center, 106 S. Trinity St.

Drop in during business hours to see pieces representing 40 years of Watson’s artistic career. The exhibit is sponsored by the Wise County Art Association and Decatur Main Street. A feature on Watson ran in the July 18 edition of All Around Wise.

Heat

#4 GREAT BALLS OF FIRE

The excessive heat warning, as issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect through Sunday night, but daily highs will exceed 100 through Monday.

Tuesday may bring slight relief with a high of 98, but you should still be cautious when outdoors. Keep a close eye on outdoor pets and check on elderly neighbors.

Summer’s not through with us yet.

Hayhurst

#5 RISING STARS

The Hayhurst Brothers make their premiere on reality show “Texas Flip N Move” at 8 p.m. Friday on the DIY Network. You probably first heard of the creative gents upon the completion of their first public art project – a sculpture of two steel dice just off the Decatur Square. They also designed the interior of Trinity Street Coffee Bar and have been active in downtown Bridgeport.

In fact, the grand opening of Hayhurst Brothers Design and Build – their first storefront – is 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at 1305 10th Street in Bridgeport. Guests will be treated to finger foods, Trinity Street Coffee and a drop or two of whiskey.
