Two men were arrested early Thursday morning after authorities say they were caught trying to steal a tractor from a local business.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said his office received a call about suspicious activity at the Zimmerer Kubota dealership south of Decatur just after 4 a.m. and two deputies responded.

“The 911 caller advised there were two people on the lot, and it appeared as if they were trying to steal a tractor,” Akin said. “The deputies arrived on scene and located the two male subjects attempting to hide in the mud and brush.”

The two men were in possession of a truck and trailer on the lot.

Akin said a stolen pickup truck the two men were apparently driving was found parked on County Road 4127 about 700 feet from the dealership. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Wichita Falls.

Deputies discovered that the two had cut a fence to gain entry to the dealership.

Norman Terry, 54, of Dallas and Brandon McCraw, 46, of Burkburnett were arrested and charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespass. The two were originally charged with theft, but Akin said that charge was dropped pending further investigation. He said he anticipates more charges will follow.

The sheriff said his department is looking to see if other areas experienced similar thefts.

“We do suspect it might be connected to other tractor thefts,” Akin said. “We’ve been in contact with other agencies and will follow up on that.”

Both Terry and McCraw were released from jail Thursday after posting bond.
