ALVORD

SUMMER READING – The Alvord Public Library’s final summer reading program is Wednesday. There will be an indoor picnic and drawing for prizes. Every child present will receive a prize. All programs are held 10 to 11 a.m. at Alvord City Hall, 215 W. Elm St. No admission charge.

BRIDGEPORT

PHOTOS FOR CALENDAR – The Bridgeport Historical Society is making a new calendar for 2019. The theme is wildflowers of Wise County. The group would like the public to contribute pictures of flowers growing in Wise County. Include name of the flower and location. Pictures can be sent to eno11@embarkmail.com before Aug. 31.

CHICO

PRAYER WALK – The second Chico Prayer Walk will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Chico Elementary School, 1120 Park Road. The walk will begin at the elementary and travel to Chico ISD’s other two campuses for prayer.

DECATUR

KNITTING CIRCLE – The Knit Wits and Crochet Nuts meet 6-8 p.m. every Thursday at the Decatur Public Library. Call 940-433-3847.

DOMINOES ANYONE? – Anybody who plays 42 or would like to learn is invited to the Decatur Senior Citizen Center at 6 p.m. on Thursdays. The center is located at 1200 N. Miller St.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE – Wise Hope Shelter and Crisis Center is holding its annual school supply drive for children whose lives have been touched by family violence. The charity is requesting: composition notebooks, tissues, dry erase markers, manila paper, disinfectant wipes, lunch sacks, gallon and quart size storage bags, hand sanitizer, folders, paper plates, and paper towels. Supplies and monetary donations may be dropped off at the Outreach Office , 608 N. Business U.S. 81/287 in Decatur. Call Janice Watkins, 940-626-4585.

COLLECTING SCHOOL SUPPLIES – Decatur Medical Lodge, 701 W. Bennett Road, will be collecting school supplies – paper, pens, spirals, lunch totes and backpacks – for middle and high school students through Aug. 13.

BUSINESS MIXER – The Decatur Chamber of Commerce will hold a business mixer at T-Mobile, 700 W. Hale Avenue, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday.

EIGHTER FROM DECATUR BIKE RALLY – The Eighter from Decatur bike rally is Aug. 11. The 7-, 25-, 53- and 106-mile routes start and end at Decatur Municipal Airport. Registration starts at 6 a.m., and the ride begins at 7. Early registration is $35 and $40 on race day with all proceeds going to Raquel’s Wings. All riders receive a T-shirt, meal and medal.

PARADISE

FOOTBALL CLASS – Helmet and Heels for ladies who want to learn a little more about football is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday in the Paradise High School cafeteria. Registration is $20 and includes a T-shirt and meal. Call Christi Ryle, 940-210-2739.

RHOME

VETERANS EVENTS – Rhome Veterans will visit the Museum of North Texas History in Wichita Falls Saturday. The tour will leave the library at 8 a.m. Lunch will follow the tour.

WISE COUNTY

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS – Solaris Hospice needs volunteers. Those who choose to participate will undergo a background check, drug screening and TB testing. Training is provided. Contact Director of Volunteer Services Caitlyn Littlejohn, clittlejohn@solarisfamily.com or 940-627-1011.

RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS – The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to serve on the Local Disaster Action Team to respond to local disasters such as house fires and tornadoes. Call Melvin Castleberry, 940-210-4908.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Wise County Committee on Aging is seeking volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors in Wise County. A valid driver’s license is required, and a background check will be performed. Call 940-627-5329 or stop by 300 N. Trinity St., Suite A, in Decatur. Cooks are also needed at the kitchen in Chico.

FEEDING WISE KIDS – The Feeding Wise Kids summer feeding program will continue its Friday distribution through the summer at the following times and locations: (Boyd) First United Methodist Church 10:30-11 a.m.; (Bridgeport) Cates Street Baptist Church 10:30-11 a.m., First Baptist Church 10:30-11 a.m., First United Methodist Church 10:30-11 a.m., Presbyterian Church 10:30-11 a.m.; (Slidell) Slidell High School 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Other locations and times are as follows: Chico 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Methodist church; Chisholm Trail Middle School and Seven Hills Elementary in Rhome on Thursdays.

DISABLE VETERANS AUCTION – The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 70 in Decatur will raffle a Ruger AR15 Oct. 6 at the Wise County Women’s Building. Tickets are $50 and only 200 will be sold. Call Bobby Harris at 940-389-1922 or Pete Potter 940-255-1838.

RANCHERS GATHERING – The Wise County Ranchers Gathering is 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Decatur. Mike McCravey, Industry Relations Manager with Texas Beef Council, will give an update on the “Beef Checkoff” and Dr. Doug Hawkins, Beef Cattle Consultant and Nutritionist with Purina Mills, will discuss “Preparation for Fall Feeding and Mineral Supplementation.” The trade show, which will feature more than 20 agriculture-related businesses offering the newest in technology for beef cattle producers. WISE CHAMBER LUNCHEON – The Wise County Chamber of Commerce August luncheon is 11:45 a.m. Monday at Weatherford College Wise County. The speaker is Wise County Judge J.D. Clark.
