During Decatur homecoming week, the contest for king and queen isn’t the only race that draws interest.

At McCarroll Middle School the big question was who would roll to the title in the rolling chair parade.

For the fourth time in five years, Chris Benjamin’s homeroom class captured the championship homecoming garter. This was the sixth year for the contest on the seventh and eighth grade campus.

“The more the teacher gets into it, the more the kids into it,” Benjamin said. “As a teacher, you really get to watch them work on it.”

The theme of year’s contest was “The Great American Road Trip.” Classes submitted entries, representing various cities and landmarks across the nation, including Mount Rushmore, the Alamo and the Statue of Liberty. Benjamin’s class’ entry was Disney World, complete with the Cinderella castle and Disney characters.

The rules for the contest have changed over the years said McCarroll Middle School art teacher Dede Diaczenko, going from originally a rolling chair to include desks and carts.

“If it rolls, it rolls,” Diaczenko said.

She said the year there was a movie theme, a class made a train out of rolling carts.

“It’s as crazy or simple as they want,” Diaczenko said. “It turns into a cardboard frenzy trying to get enough cardboard.”

The contest has grown from 15 entries the first year to 24 this year.

“Every year it gets bigger and bigger,” Diaczenko said.

Students build the entries during their homeroom period. Benjamin said his class took a couple of hours during school and after to complete the entry.

The extra time paid off, and he looked forward to hanging the new garter on the wall with the other awards.
