Carter Boclair and Wesley Miller initially never aimed to be at the top of their class.

But through perseverance and hard work over the past four years, the two earned the opportunity to lead the Northwest High School Class of 2018 across the stage for graduation June 2 at the University of North Texas Coliseum.

Boclair, the son of Joseph Boclair and Melissa Solomon, earned the distinction of being the class’ valedictorian. Miller, the son of Leonard and Emily Miller, is the salutatorian.

“It didn’t start that way,” Boclair said. “Once I realized it was possible [it became a goal].

“It was work, but not as much as one would expect.”

The two took slightly different routes to the top. Boclair was a member of the school’s Creative Media Production Academy. Miller went through the Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Both said the academies were a huge help.

“My academy was good because it gave me a chance to work as a team as well as working in a more professional setting as far as completing projects,” Boclair said.

Miller said his academy helped with a variety of skills.

“STEM was good for helping with problem-solving skills and giving experience,” Miller said. “The engineering was helpful but the best part was the skills that came out of it.”

Both are heading to the same destination in the fall, the University of Texas in Austin. Boclair will study computer science in hopes of becoming a software engineer. Miller will be studying physics. He’s undecided on a future career.

As they leave Northwest and head to Austin, Boclair and Miller both thanked educators that helped them as much out of the classroom as in it develop their creativity and personality.
