COUNCIL APPROVES LAND PURCHASE – The Decatur City Council Monday gave its approval to the city’s Economic Development Corp.’s plan to purchase 162 acres of land southeast of Decatur for development of a business park. The EDC board approved the purchase of the property from Wise County Consortium LLC at a cost of $12,000 per acre at its meeting two weeks ago. The purchase required the approval of the council before the sale could move forward. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands today.

TUESDAY VOLLEYBALL RESULTS – Trinity Vinzant buried four of her 14 kills in the third set as Decatur took control of the match in the 25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 25-9 win over Bridgeport. The Chico Lady Dragons completed the season sweep of the cross-county rival Alvord Tuesday. Chico won 27-25, 25-16, 25-22 to move to 7-3 in District 9-2A. The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets moved to 9-1 in District 8-3A with a sweep of City View Tuesday. Jordyn Todd tallied 12 kills. Laney Pellegrini finished with eight and Shaylee Martin five. For a second time in District 8-3A, Jacksboro outlasted Paradise to win in five games. Jacksboro won 25-21, 25-15, 20-25, 19-25, 15-10. Gracie Barnett put down 15 kills. Harley Mayfield and Ashley Kosman had eight apiece.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY – The 9-4A championships will be held at Joe Wheeler Park at 3 p.m. today. The 11-2A meet is in Poolville and the 21-A event is set for Bowie.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT – Decatur Main Street is having Girls Night Out on the downtown square 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

NEWARK CRUISIN’ DAYS – The 30th annual Newark Cruisin’ Days is Thursday through Saturday. Events begin with a carnival at 6 p.m. Thursday. The event continues Friday evening with the carnival opening at 6 p.m., and bingo beginning at 7 at the fire hall. Carnival ride armbands are $20. Saturday’s parade is at 10 a.m., and the carnival opens at 10:30. Bingo runs from 11-3 p.m., and the Mr. and Mrs. Cruisin’ Days Pageant is at 1 p.m. For information on the pageant, call Dawn Killough at 817-692-4959. The car show starts at 2. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Decatur Lions Club and Decatur Boy Scout Troop 121 is having their 13th annual golf tournament Saturday at the Decatur Country Club. Registration for the four-player scramble is at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9. Cost is $60 per person, which includes lunch, green fee and cart. Mulligans will be sold. There will be contests for hole-in-one, closest-to-the-pin and longest drive, plus door prizes. SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS – Applications for Rhome/South Wise Spirit of Christmas are available at Rhome City Hall, 261 N. School Road. The program provides toys and clothing for economically disadvantaged children. Applications should be returned by Friday, Nov. 10.

FUNERAL for Raymond St. John, 83, of Chico is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport with burial at Cumby Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
