TRWD RELEASES WATER FROM LAKE – The Tarrant Regional Water District is releasing water from Lake Bridgeport, a spokesman for the district confirmed Monday. TRWD Communications Manager Chad Lorance said the district started a low flow release from the lake about two weeks ago to help meet demands downstream in Tarrant County. Lorance explained the release as an annual occurrence and “part of our regular water supply plan to offset the high summer demands.” The National Weather Service reported Lake Bridgeport received 5.62 inches of rain in July. The lake was 835.4 feet, or .6 under conservation level early Wednesday morning. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands today.

THORNBERRY LOOKS INTO BROADBAND CONCERNS – Wise County citizens’ unhappiness with their internet service could inspire action in Washington. District 13 Congressman Mac Thornberry met with Wise County Judge J.D. Clark Monday to discuss the recent broadband internet infrastructure survey the county initiated in a partnership with Bridgeport and Decatur economic development corporations. Ninety-four percent of the 54 businesses who returned the surveys were not happy with their internet speeds. Thornberry said Congress will potentially be working on an infrastructure bill in the fall, and part of that bill might deal with funding broadband infrastructure in rural communities. SUMMER RAIN – It’s been raining in various parts of Wise County since Tuesday night with totals as follows: .75 in Bridgeport; .71 in Rhome; .65 in Alvord; .58 in Decatur; and .40 in Greenwood. More rain is expected throughout the day with a high temperature of only 87 degrees.

RENEW SEASON TICKETS – Decatur Eagle football season ticket renewals are 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. today through Thursday and Monday, Aug. 7, through Friday, Aug. 11, at the DHS ticket office. Online renewals are now through Sunday, Aug. 13. New season ticket sales are 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Sept. 1, at the ticket office. Cost is $35 per seat. There are five home games this season.

STUDENT ORIENTATION – McCarroll Middle School will have WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) orientation on Thursday for sixth, seventh and new-to-the-district eighth graders. Sixth-grade student orientation is 9-11:30 a.m. at the sixth grade campus, 1200 Eagle Drive, and seventh grade/new eighth grade student orientation is 1-3:30 p.m. at the seventh/eighth grade campus, 1201 W. Thompson. The purpose of the half-day retreat is to make the transition from elementary school to middle school and from the sixth grade campus to seventh grade a positive one.

REGISTRATION FAIR – Alvord ISD will hold a registration fair at the high school today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 940-427-5975 for more information.

GEAR UP – Decatur Church of Christ’s free school supply event, Gear Up, is 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the church, Farm Road 51 South and Preskitt Road. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade who are accompanied by an adult will receive a backpack filled with school supplies. There will also be a free meal, haircuts, clothes, books and other services.

BYA SOCCER SIGNUPS – Bridgeport Youth Association will hold soccer sign-ups 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 5 and 12 at the Bridgeport Public Library. Cost is $65 per player.

FREE LUNCH AND MEAL BAG – A group of nurses in the community will be serving a free lunch 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday in the Boyd Intermediate School parking lot. Hands only CPR will be taught, and each family will be given a meal bag. All school-age children are welcome.
