FIRE MARSHAL TO RETIRE – Wise County commissioners accepted Fire Marshal Chuck Beard’s resignation Monday morning. Beard’s last day is Friday. He started with the county in 2013. He’d previously retired from Weatherford in early 2012. “It was time. It’ll give me more time with my family,” Beard said about his retirement. “It’s been fun. I’ve met a lot of great people and made a lot of great friends here. There’s a lot of great people here.” Commissioners will begin seeking a new fire marshal. They appointed a candidate screening committee Monday, which includes County Judge J.D. Clark, Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin Burns, Sheriff Lane Akin and office holders from the Wise County Firefighters Association – President Chris Caster, Vice President Sam Hahn and Treasurer Nate Mara. SHELTER CLOSED – The Wise County Animal Shelter will close at noon Wednesday and be closed the rest of the week for the Thanksgiving holiday. The shelter will reopen at normal hours Monday.

DECATUR TRASH SCHEDULE – Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, normal Thursday trash pickup will instead take place on Friday, and normal Friday pickup will take place on Saturday. Recycling will take place on its normal schedule on Wednesday.

SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Fossil, Rock, and Mineral Society will meet 6:30 tonight at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur Wesley Center, 200 East Main. The Society will host their annual Thanksgiving Dinner. There will be election of new officers for 2018 and a rock-related auction for scholarship fund. Visitors are welcome. Call 940-735-0361.

BAKE SALE – The Aggie Moms Club will hold a bake sale 9 a.m.-noon today at First State Bank in Decatur.

FREE MOVIE – Bridgeport Box Office Presents “Sing” at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at the Arcadia, 1009 Halsell St. This is a free event and doors open 30 minutes prior to movie. Concessions will be on sale. Call 940-683-3480.

EARLY EDITION – Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the midweek Wise County Messenger was printed a day early. Look for the paper in mailboxes and on newsstands beginning today. The midweek edition includes a number of advertisements for Black Friday deals as well as our annual Holiday Gift Guide special section.

FUNERALS – Service for Judy Kay Smith, 71, of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. today at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery.

FUNERAL for Willie White, 89, of Bridgeport is 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport with burial at Chico Cemetery. Family visitation is one hour prior to the service.

MEMORIAL for Larry Rue Hulsey, 70, of Pantego is 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Boyd.

SERVICE for Madeleine Martin, 64, of Newark is pending at Hawkins-Boyd.
