LANDOWNERS TO FIGHT ANNEXATION – Landowners in the areas the city of Bridgeport plans to annex in November met last night to discuss how to stop the annexation. In a packed conference room at La Quinta Inn and Suites, the landowners decided to come to the city’s public hearings next week in force to oppose the annexation. The city will hold the hearings 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 and Wednesday, Oct. 11 at City Hall, 900 Thompson St. The landowners also discussed their intention to petition the county for an election on Senate Bill 6 after the bill goes into effect in December. Smaller counties can elect to opt in to SB 6, which prohibits involuntary annexation.

CRUISE NIGHTS – The last Cruise Nights on the Courthouse Square of 2017 is Saturday. Registration is 4-7 p.m., and awards are at 8. Cost is $15 per vehicle. Stores and restaurants on the Square will be open late for visitors. Call Decatur Main Street, 940-399-9558.

RED CROSS SEEKS VOLUNTEERS – The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to serve on the Local Disaster Action Team to respond to local disasters such as house fires and tornadoes. Call Melvin Castleberry at 940-210-4908.

BOYD WALL OF HONOR – Boyd ISD will induct three former employees into the Boyd ISD Wall of Honor this Friday. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in the Boyd High School cafeteria. Wall of Honor inductees are: Boyd High School English teacher Oggletta Burns; 1973-1989, Boyd High School English Teacher Linda Parker; 1985-2001 and Boyd Intermediate School Principal Lynn Todd; 1979-1995.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS – Ascension and St. Mark’s Church will hold a Blessing of the Animals 10 a.m. Saturday. The church is located at 5094 U.S. 380 E. immediately east of the WCWC campus. Animals should be on leashes or in carriers. Following the blessing, donations for local animal shelters will be distributed, and those who wish to are invited to join Fr. Keith Roberson for the blessing of animals at the C.A.R.E. facility in Bridgeport.

COALITION MEETING – The Wise County Community Coalition will meet noon Monday at Pizza Hut in Decatur. The speaker will be J.D. Allen, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Boyd. Allen will speak on unity, race relations and respect for one another. For information, call Mike Bell at 940-627-9082.

GOLF TOURNAMENT – Wise County Special Needs Baseball is holding its 4th Annual Tee It Up Fore the Field Golf Tournament at The Club at Runaway Bay on Friday, Oct. 20. Registration for the four-man scramble is at noon with a shotgun start at 1. There will also be a dinner, silent auction, raffle and awards. GARDEN CLUB MEETING – Bridgeport Garden Club, which serves all of Wise County, will hold its monthly meeting 11:30 a.m. today at the Bridgeport Community Center. The program, “Monarch Migration,” will be presented by Carol Welch of the Parker County Master Gardeners. Lunch will be served, and all are welcome. Call Deb Lewis at 443-415-4240.

BAKE SALE – A bake sale benefiting Bridgeport FFA is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday at First Financial Bank in Bridgeport. Money from the sale will be used to attend the National FFA Convention.

FUNERAL – Memorial service for Walter Francis Pac, 92, of Decatur is 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur. Family visitation is 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home.
