SCHOOL ENROLLMENT GROWTH – At least five Wise County public school districts saw an increase in student enrollment on the first day of school this year compared to the last day of school in the spring. Three of those schools – Boyd, Decatur and Northwest – saw enrollment grow by more than 100 students. Bridgeport and Paradise also reported increased enrollment. Alvord and Chico saw enrollment drop by 15 and 10 students, respectively. Slidell’s numbers were not available. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands now.

FLOOD VICTIMS RELIEF EFFORT – The Decatur Police Department is collecting supplies to help families of Yes Prep Public Schools in Houston. The department is seeking donations of water, nonperishable food, new underwear and socks and gently used other clothing, cleaning supplies, baby supplies (diapers, wipes, bottles, formula etc), toiletries, school supplies of any kind, Walmart and Lowe’s gift cards. Donations may be made at the police department through Friday. All the donations will be delivered Saturday.

HOLIDAY CLOSING – Wise County Development Services and the Decatur dumpsite will close Monday for the Labor Day holiday. Boyd and Cottondale dumpsites will close the next business day on Wednesday.

BOOK CLUB MEETING – Decatur Public Library’s The Book Experience Book Club meets 11 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month, and the next meeting is Sept. 5. The book for September is “Cleopatra’s Daughter” by Michelle Moran. Join the Decatur Public Library and book club members for cookies, coffee and a book. Call the library at 940-393-0290.

FREEDOM TEXAS – Freedom Texas is having a special public meeting 7 tonight in the meeting room at Pizza Hut, 601 S. Washburn St., in Decatur. This group works to educate people about the sovereignty, security and self-sufficiency of Texas and promotes its eventual independence. Executive directors Paul Keefer and Tommy Attaway will explain the new direction for Freedom Texas and the work that is being done to further the goal of Texas independence. TASTE OF WISE – The 7th Annual Taste of Wise is 5-6:30 p.m. and 7-8:30 tonight at the Decatur Conference Center. Sample appetizers, drinks and dishes from local restaurants. Tickets are $10. FUNERALS – Service for Betty Simmons, 80, of Bridgeport is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

MEMORIAL service for Vickie Yvonne Mouilleseaux, 61, of Runaway Bay is 5 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins Chapel in Bridgeport. Graveside memorial will be held at a later date at Albany Cemetery in Albany.

GRAVESIDE service for Jerry Lynn Weatherly, 75, of Boyd is 2 p.m. Friday at Azleland Cemetery in Azle. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.

MEMORIAL and visitation for Ronald Charles Pellegrini, 70, of Aurora is 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur with burial in Braintree, Mass., in October.

MEMORIAL service for Mary Wampole, 64, of Arlington is 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Jones Family Funeral Home-Decatur.
