BOARD SELECTS CONSTRUCTION MANAGER – Alvord ISD trustees Thursday heard presentations from four construction firms before selecting their top pick to manage a potential future bond project. The board ranked Fort Worth-based Buford-Thompson Company first, impressed by its references and presenter. The firm has worked with 67 school districts, including Aledo, Bowie, Chico and Decatur ISDs.

SCHOOLING TO RUN FOR COUNTY CLERK – Julie Schooling of Decatur announced Thursday she will run for Wise County clerk in 2018. The Alvord native will be on the Republican ballot in the March 6 primary. She currently works for Wise Title Company in Decatur. Read more in the weekend Messenger on newsstands Saturday.

CHICO WINS – The Chico Dragons held Diamond Hill-Jarvis to just 44 yards of offense in a 40-0 blanking Thursday at Fort Worth’s Scarborough-Handley Field. The Dragons improved to 2-3 with the dominating defensive effort. Chico gave up only five first downs and 31 yards rushing. The Dragons forced three turnovers and recorded a safety. The Eaton Eagles stunned Northwest 58-44 behind 304 yards and four touchdowns from Titus Swen.

FRIDAY FOOTBALL – The Decatur Eagles and Bridgeport Bulls renew their rivalry at 7:30 tonight at Bull-Memorial Stadium in Bridgeport. REUNION RUN – The annual Reunion Run returns to Joe Wheeler Park in Decatur at 8 a.m. Saturday. Decatur and Bridgeport will run against most of 9-4A in the meet.

VOLLEYBALL WEEKEND – The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets welcome in rival Paradise at 1 p.m. Saturday. Friday, Decatur takes on Gainesville at home. Bridgeport faces Sanger at home. Northwest heads to Eaton. Saturday, Alvord goes to Perrin and Chico faces Bryson.

FOOD DRIVE – Newark Neighbors to Neighbors will collect non-perishables for the Southeast Wise County Community Services food pantry. Neighbors to Neighbors will be at Delora Doughty Royal Park, on the corner of McCanne and Central Avenue across from the fire station, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday to collect donations.

4-H EXPLOSION – Wise County 4-H will host an informational night 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Wise County Fairgrounds. The event will include a free hot dog dinner, games and activities and information on the 4-H program in Wise County. Call the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office at 940-627-3341.

FEES WAIVED – In celebration of National Public Lands Day Saturday, day-use fees will be waived for the day at the LBJ National Grasslands. The focus of National Public Lands Day is to instill a sense of shared stewardship and educate the public about the importance of natural resources.

NIGHT OUT – The Decatur Police Department will host National Night Out 6-8 p.m. Tuesday on the Decatur Square. The event will include free hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn, ice cream, jump house, child fingerprint ID, distracted driving simulator and the Decatur Fire Department Clown Show.

PARADISE MAIN STREET FESTIVAL – The Paradise Historical Society’s Main Street Festival is Saturday. There will be a car show, antique tractor show, blue ribbon baking contest, washer tournament, quilt show with items for sale and auctions. There will also be a stage featuring local entertainment. All proceeds benefit the recently-opened historical museum and veterans’ park. TASTE BRIDGEPORT – Taste Bridgeport is 4-8 p.m. Saturday. Downtown merchants along Halsell Street have partnered with local eateries and wineries, a distillery and a brewery so attendees can eat and drink while they browse. Tickets are available for purchase at bridgeportchamber.org – $30 for individuals, $25 per person for couples and $25 for teachers. Groups of 10 or more can receive a discount rate by calling the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce at 940-683-2076. Tickets include food tasting, a wine glass, wine pairings and entry to the Le Freak concert after-party. Ticket holders can check in any time between 4 and 8 p.m., and tastings end at 9 p.m.

GLOW BALL – Decatur Police Department’s third annual Glow Ball Tournament, benefiting its Back the Blue Scholarship fund, is Saturday at Bridgeport Country Club. Nine holes will be played in daylight and nine holes in the dark with a 4 p.m. shotgun start. Cost is $50 per person or $200 per team, which includes glow balls, a meal between rounds and prizes. FALL FEST – Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 1305 Deer Park Road, in Decatur is having a Fall Fest noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be a Christian band, a bounce house, buggy and train rides, bingo, raffles, food and drinks. A bilingual mass will be at 10:45 a.m.

BOOK FESTIVAL – Decatur Public Library’s The Same Page Book Festival is 1-5 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature local authors, opening and closing keynote speakers, sessions for aspiring writers and readers, and an author fair where readers can chat with authors and purchase books. Opening keynote speaker is Charlotte Canion, author of “You Have to Laugh to Keep from Crying: How to Parent Your Parents,” and the closing speaker is Decatur’s Julia Heaberlin, author of many best-selling thrillers.

GOLF TOURNEY – A golf tournament benefiting Pam Ames, who was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in February, is Saturday at The Club at Runaway Bay. It’s a four-man scramble with a 1:30 p.m. tee time. Cost is $75 per person or $300 per team, which includes dinner at 6 p.m. To attend the dinner and auction only, cost is $15 per plate.
