BITTER COLD – Freezing precipitation and minor ice accumulation is possible this weekend in Wise County, according to the National Weather Service. Beginning as early as Saturday afternoon, there is a chance of freezing drizzle with falling temperatures throughout the day. The high temperature Sunday is 29 degrees with a 30 percent chance of precipitation and a north wind blowing 15 to 20 mph. The high Monday – New Year’s Day – is predicted to be 26 degrees with winds blowing 5 to 15 mph. Drivers should be cautious because there could be ice on bridges, overpasses and some roadways. The NWS recommends avoiding travel during this time period.

TOURNAMENT PLAY CONTINUES – Wise County teams will continue to compete in several holiday basketball tournaments throughout the area today. The Decatur Eagles and Bridgeport Sissies both fell in the opening round of the Whataburger Tournament on Thursday while the Northwest Texans came back to defeat Houston Sam Houston 81-76. Avery Anderson scored a game-high 33 points for Northwest in the victory, with 24 of them coming in the fourth quarter. The Texans advance to play Waxahachie in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. today. Decatur will take on Liberty Hill at 1:30 p.m. today in the consolation bracket. Bridgeport squares off with Dallas Christian at 10 a.m. today in the consolation bracket. Outside the Whataburger, the Boyd Yellowjackets and Decatur Lady Eagles both won their first games in the NCTC Tournament, knocking off Valley View and Muenster, respectively. The Slidell Greyhounds lost to Electra 55-41 in the opening round of the Windthorst Tournament but re-grouped to beat City View 57-32. The Greyhounds will face the winner of Alvord and Petrolia in the finals of the consolation bracket today.

HOLIDAY CLOSING – All Wise County administrative offices will be closed New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.

MEALS ON WHEELS HOLIDAY SCHEDULE – Wise County Committee on Aging, provider of Meals on Wheels, will be closed Monday, Jan. 1.

SHELTER HOLIDAY – The Wise County Animal Shelter will close for the New Year holiday on Saturday, Dec. 30, and Monday, Jan. 1.

TRASH COLLECTION CHANGE – Next week trash and recycling pickup in Decatur will be shifted forward by one day due to the New Year holiday. Normal Monday and Thursday trash collection will instead be Tuesday and Friday. Normal Tuesday and Friday trash collection will instead be Wednesday and Saturday. Recycling collection will take place on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

LIBRARY ACTIVITIES – The Newark Public Library will have Maker Space STEAM activities for students 1:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 2 and 3. Activities include Code and Go Mouse, 3-D pen printing and Snap Circuits alternative energy projects, plus Stikbot animation. FUNERALS – Mass of Christian burial for Dorothy N. Pennartz, 78, of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. today at Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Brad Landen, 38, of Alvord is 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Alvord with burial at Alvord Cemetery. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Sharon Taylor, 68, of Weatherford is 2 p.m. today at Hawkins-Bridgeport. Burial is private. Visitation is at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

MEMORIAL service for Theo Padilla, 69, of Fort Worth is 3 p.m. today at Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd. Visitation is at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

FUNERAL for Lillian Ruth Musgrove, 93, of Paradise is 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Paradise. Burial will be at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas at a later date. Visitation is at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Hawkins-Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

MEMORIAL service for Rachel Ince, 44, of Bridgeport is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Decatur Church of Christ. Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

SERVICE for Sharyn R. Farley, 72, of Decatur is pending at Hawkins-Decatur.

SERVICE for Jose Ramirez, 45, of Bridgeport is pending at Hawkins-Bridgeport.
