It took less than an hour for Bridgeport to finish off Gainesville Friday.

The Sissies won 25-8, 25-17, 25-11.

“They enjoyed themselves out there,” coach Morgan Mathews said. “We played cohesively.”

The Sissies jumped to an early lead, opening the first set 2-0 and quickly expanding that to a 14-2 lead. Mathews credited strong defensive work from Kristen Grooms in shutting down the Lady Leopards.

“She hit the ball well,” she said. “She always finds a hole, and she was locked on defense.”

Grooms had six kills in the match.

Bridgeport struggled as the Lady Leopards surged in the second set, with both teams committing errors.

“We missed some serves,” Mathews said. “We got a little too relaxed.”

The scores held tight, with the teams trading scores until several Gainesville errors let the Sissies open up a 21-14 lead. They put it away with four more scores.

The Lady Leopards opened scoring in the third, with the two teams trading leads until Bridgeport again leapt ahead to a 16-6 lead. Mathews said the team had tried to limit Gainesville to fewer than 10 points in the final set, but just missed that chance.

After dropping 3 sets to Argyle Tuesday, the win Friday was needed.

“I think we were just ready for a win,” she said. “With our district being so hard, we needed that win.”

Anna Strother finished the match with 4 kills and 6 assists. Morgen Davidson logged 35 assists. Cheyanne Weirich had 25. Emily Vidal had 34 digs and 8 aces. Strother logged 5.
