Behind five aces from Maddie Hager at the start of a must-win fourth set, Chico forced Poolville into a tiebreaker Tuesday.

Poolville senior Billie Roberts quickly brought a halt to the Chico rally in the final set, burying four kills and serving a pair of aces to keep the Lady Monarchs atop District 9-2A.

Roberts finished with 16 kills and served seven aces in Poolville’s 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 15-10 victory at Chico High School gym.

“Their No. 4 [Roberts] was a good server,” said Chico setter Laynee North. “It was tough.”

Poolville scored 18 points over the five sets on aces in moving to 6-0 in district.

Chico (19-4) dropped to 4-2 with one match left in the first half of district against Graford.

“I’m not upset. We were playing a really good senior-laden team,” said Chico coach Jody Carter. “I’m proud of the effort. We grew up a bit tonight.

“We’re still where we want to be. Tonight prepared us for the playoffs.”

The Lady Dragons couldn’t land the big swings against Poolville. Setter Laynee North mixed the ball around to six different hitters and landed four kills of her own. North finished with 18 assists.

“I was just trying to give them a variety,” North said.

Jessica Byers finished with a team-high 10 kills. Her second kill put Chico up 22-16 in the opening set and on the way to taking a quick lead.

Poolville quickly responded dominating the second set from the service line with seven aces.

Chico took a 19-15 lead in the third set, but couldn’t hold off Poolville. Roberts’ ace capped a 10-1 run to close the set.

Hager served three straight aces as Chico ran out to an 11-3 lead in the fourth set. Hager finished with seven aces, including her five in the fourth set.

“She’s probably our best server,” Carter said.

After Poolville pulled within five, 19-14, Byers put Chico back on track for the eight-point win to force the tiebreaker.

Poolville scored the first five points of the tiebreaker, including two kills from Roberts. Chico never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
