The Chico Lady Dragons are carrying over the dominating tone they set during non-district play into 9-2A.

The Lady Dragons (17-2) moved to 2-0 in District 9-2A with a sweep of Newcastle Tuesday (25-16, 25-12, 25-21).

“It was a battle. Newcastle was the best I’ve seen them,” said Chico coach Jody Carter. “It was a surprise and challenge we needed.”

The Lady Dragons continued to dominate the net behind Jessica Byers, who had 18 kills and four blocks. She also served four aces.

“She’s our leader. We sit down every day and talk that she has to perform,” Carter said. “She can do other things than hit also.”

While she is leading the attack, the Lady Dragons are getting solid contributions from other hitters. Kayla Clampitt added 13 kills against Newcastle. Michaela Martin and Cassie Byers recorded 10 apiece.

“Going into the season, we didn’t know who our go-to players would be with the five we lost from last year,” Carter said. “These girls have worked hard. We have multiple weapons we are working with.”

Martin also had three blocks and three aces.

Laynee North set the ball 84 times.

The Lady Dragons now face rival Alvord Saturday, looking to get to 3-0 in the league.

“It’s always a challenge playing a rival,” Carter said. “We know where their strengths are. They have size. But we’ve seen big girls before and know how to hit around them.”
