The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets’ 30-match winning streak in district ended Oct. 3 with a four-game loss to Holliday.

Since the setback, the Lady Yellowjackets have elevated their game to new heights, including Tuesday’s sweep of 8-3A co-leader Henrietta that put them on the precipice of a third straight district title. Boyd just needed a win over Jacksboro Friday or Paradise Tuesday to wrap up the title.

Boyd has won four straight matches since the loss – all in three games.

“Losing to Holliday was a wake-up call,” said junior outside hitter Jordyn Todd.

Libero Larrin Maxwell added: “We’ve been scrappy. Everyone has the mentality that we are not going to let the ball hit the floor.”

Boyd coach Dusty Crafton agreed that the Holliday match was a wake-up call.

“All my coaching friends say that it may be the best thing to happen to us,” Crafton said. “The kids owned up and took responsibility. They know they have to work as hard as they can to be as good as they can be.”

Against Henrietta, the Lady Yellowjackets continued their season trend of solid play against state-ranked teams. Boyd, which has wins over Argyle, Decatur and went five games with No. 2 Callisburg, hit .319 against Henrietta in the 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 victory.

“They were tied for first. Our kids came out on fire,” Crafton said. “We have the type of kids that know when it’s an important game. They have bought in that every opportunity on the floor is a chance to improve.”

On the way to helping the Lady Yellowjackets close in on a district title, Maxwell established a record for digs in a season, breaking the previous mark of 499.

“I’ve been working hard. That was a goal for this season,” Maxwell said.

Todd is closing in on Kayleigh Pappajohn’s record for kills in a season of 510.
