Over their first two varsity seasons, the Victory Christian Academy Patriots have celebrated a pair of district championships and reached the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship Division II six-man semifinal twice.

Last year, Lakeland Christian knocked off the Patriots a step short of reaching the title game, 65-42.

In their bid to stay atop TCAF Division II District 1, the Patriots will have to rely on a mostly new roster without familiar playmakers Giddeon McPeek and Justin McBride.

Playing quarterback and running back, McPeek threw for 1,829 yards and 26 touchdowns and added 1,797 yards rushing and 31 scores.

McBride hauled in 40 receptions for 1,068 yards with 21 touchdowns.

“We graduated about 5,000 yards of offense,” said Victory Christian coach Joe Berry. “We’re going to need some young kids to play well.”

Senior Jackson Shriver is the leading returning rusher and receiver. He caught 23 passes for 537 yards and ran for another 454 with seven scores.

Logan McNamara, who missed all of last season after suffering a concussion in the summer before, is the team’s other senior and will be an option for the Patriots’ attack.

“It’s good to be back,” McNamara said. “We’ll definitely be more of a running team this year.”

Berry said McNamara is a welcome addition and played well in the team’s first scrimmage.

Freshman Grant Shriver and Hunter McKee are working at quarterback.

“Both quarterbacks played well in the scrimmage,” Berry said. “They are getting more comfortable.”

The Patriots have trimmed down the offense with six freshmen on the team.

Berry did note that the offensive line with center Justin Foster and guard Austin Howell are playing solid.

“We’re blocking better than we ever have,” Berry said.

Defensively, the Patriots are a work in progress, replacing key contributors from the secondary.

“We need to get some people to make defensive plays. We don’t have the technique down yet,” Berry said.

Even with a young roster, the Patriots expect to contend for a league title.

“We have a chance to win district. There are two new teams, and Azle Christian will be tough and has everyone back,” Berry said. “If we don’t have a meltdown and can keep everyone healthy, we’ll be there.”

Victory will have to wait until Sept. 8 against Weatherford Christian to start its season and has open dates Sept. 22 and Oct. 20.
