This weekend, Slidell’s Kayson Roof will bid to become a four-time state qualifier.

Roof, the 2015 silver medalist in the 300 hurdles, will compete at the Class A Region III track meet at Whitney Friday and Saturday in four events. In addition to the 300 hurdles, she will compete in the pole vault, 100 and 4×100.

Roof is hopeful to land another trip to Austin.

“It would be special to go for a fourth time,” Roof said.

Like in previous years, she’s dedicated her season to others. This year, Roof said she is competing in memory of late Slidell coach Dennis Stroud.

“It would make it pretty special to make it to state,” Roof said.

Roof won the 21/22-A area race in the 300 hurdles, running 50.63. She turned in a 48.26 last year at state to finish fifth.

“I don’t feel like I did my freshman year. I’m older now,” Roof said. “I’ve been looking at the competition’s times. If I work hard enough, I have a chance. I have to keep my head on straight to win.”

Roof qualified for state as a freshman and sophomore in the pole vault. She didn’t compete in the event last year. She picked it back up this year and won the area meet, clearing 8 feet.

“Last year I was afraid to do it after Coach [Cody] Vanover left,” Roof said. “With this being my last year, I thought I may as well do it. It’s my last chance and may as well go for it.”

Roof also won the 100 at area, running a 13.43.

“Coach [Shelton] said I may have a shot in the 100,” Roof said.
