After eight years of training in the pool at the previous Fit-N-Wise facility, Allie Blevins was a bit overwhelmed Monday by her first workout at the new pool.

“It doesn’t feel real,” said the Decatur senior. “It’s weird to think this is now my pool. It’s a lot different with the higher ceiling and the way Brook [Huffman]’s voice echoes. It’s a great environment. Over there, it felt like we were in the basement of the hospital.”

Decatur High School swimmers and members of the Fit-N-Wise Muscle team held their first workouts in the new eight-lane pool Monday. The 25-yard pool is certified by USA Swim and can hold meets.

“It brings me to tears. It’s so amazing,” said Huffman, who coaches both teams.

Huffman said Fit-N-Wise will be putting in timing pads and a digital system for meets in the future.

Each lane of the new pool has starting blocks. The pool at the old facility only had two starting blocks.

“It’s the best thing for the program to utilize this type of facility,” Huffman said.

She expects the programs to grow even more with the new pool. The high school team has 30 swimmers, and there are 55 members in the Muscle program.

“I started the team in 2000, and it was an itty-bitty team,” Huffman said. “I left, and this is my fourth year back. We’ve doubled in size.”
