In their fourth year of playing softball for the Chico Lady Dragons, Brooke Vidal and Kiley Marburger will get their first chance to play in the postseason Thursday.

Chico will open the Class 2A Region II playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Jacksboro against Perrin-Whitt.

“We’ve had a lot of learning experiences and built off everything we’ve learned,” Vidal said. “It’s good to know how hard we’ve worked to get here.”

Chico enters the playoffs as the fourth seed out of District 12-2A after going 9-5 in the league and 19-10 overall.

Chico coach Tommy Tomlinson credited experience for helping the team reach the postseason.

“The girls have grown up. We were close last year,” Tomlinson said. “They are a year older and have learned how to play with each other.”

The Lady Dragons have four sophomores in the starting lineup with two juniors and three seniors. Marburger pointed out the whole team returned from 2016.

“We didn’t lose anyone and built off what we had,” she said.

Chico dropped its final two regular season games against Collinsville and Valley View but had won five of six prior to that.

The Lady Dragons relied on big offensive games with multi-run innings.

“One person gets a hit, and we build off that momentum,” Marburger said.
