The Northwest Texans are one win away from completing a second straight unbeaten non-district schedule.

Standing in their way is rival Byron Nelson.

The two Northwest schools kick off at Northwest ISD at 7 p.m. Friday.

“Playing Byron Nelson is always a big game,” said Northwest coach Bill Poe. “It’s our last non-district game and we want to end non-district on a good note. We’re blessed to be 2-0.”

Northwest is facing a Byron Nelson squad that is looking for its first win after losses to Sachse (48-6) and San Angelo Central (36-10).

“Byron Nelson has lost to two really good teams. Their record doesn’t reflect how good of a team they are,” Poe said. “We have to be ready to play Friday.”

The Bobcats’ offense has been stifled in the two losses, managing only 171.5 yards per game. Quarterback Nick Santini has thrown for 229 yards and two touchdowns.

The Texans are coming off a big win over McKinney North, storming back from a 31-20 deficit in the first half to win 56-46.

Northwest piled up 639 yards, including 407 rushing. Running back DeMareus Hosey rushed for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

“We got behind the eight-ball early, but the kids fought back to pull out a win,” Poe said. “Good teams find a way to win when it’s not pretty. To be able to bear down and get a win is huge for this team.”
