The Northwest Texans start a critical final four-game stretch Friday with them on the outside looking in for a playoff spot out of District 6-5A.

And the Texans’ first test in the stretch will not be easy, going on the road to play unbeaten Boswell at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.

The Texans (4-2) are 1-2 in district after their 45-14 win last Friday over Saginaw. Northwest trails Aledo, Boswell, Brewer and Eaton in the league standings.

“We’re fighting for our playoff lives,” said Northwest coach Bill Poe. “This is a must-win. We’ve got to get this one to give ourselves a chance.”

Boswell (6-0) moved to 3-0 in district last week with a 25-23 win over Brewer. The narrow win followed a 15-14 victory over Eaton.

“They are playing extremely well. They keep finding a way to win tight games,” Poe said. “We are going to relish this chance as the underdog.”

Boswell quarterback Braydn Thomas has thrown for 1,110 yards and 13 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

His top two targets are Breshun Berry (27 catches for 294 yards) and Brandon Chatman (40 receptions for 278 yards).

Northwest had a big game last week against Saginaw by quarterback Prince Mavula, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for another.

“With what Saginaw was doing defensively, we knew he would have an opportunity to make plays with his arm and legs,” Poe said.
