A second open date in four weeks brought mixed emotions for the Victory Christian Patriots and coach Joe Berry last week.

“It was good and bad. We want to play, but it was good to work on some fundamentals,” Berry said. “As young as we are, we can’t get enough of that.”

The Patriots (2-0) are anxious to get back on the field at 7 p.m. Friday against Cornerstone Christian of Granbury.

Cornerstone enters the game 1-3. It beat Carrollton Christian 39-7 last week, rushing for 205 yards. Weldon Wallace had 93 yards and two touchdowns.

“They have good size. They do a good job executing,” Berry said. “We have to be disciplined defensively and cut out mistakes.”

In the two games, the Patriots have piled up yards on the ground. Logan McNamara has 422 yards and seven touchdowns.

“We’re blocking better than we have in our three years,” Berry said. “The guys up front are doing a good job of maintaining blocks and getting to the second level. We’ve got to establish the run to get the passing game going.”
