Football: Panthers regroup after tough loss

The Paradise Panthers suffered a heart-breaking, double-overtime loss last week in the District 4-3A Division I opener against Breckenridge.

Now, the Panthers must face defending league champion and seventh-ranked Brock in a road contest Friday.

“They are a really good, solid football team,” said Paradise coach Ronnie Gage. “They remind me a lot of some of my Lewisville teams. It’s nothing fancy. They are just good at what they do.

“We look at it as an opportunity. If we can move the ball consistently and not give up any big plays, maybe we can stay in the game and pull off the upset.”

Brock piled up 496 yards last week in the 53-14 win over Ponder. Jake Teskey and Tanner Patino ran for 63 yards each. Nine different backs carried the ball for Brock.

The Panthers defended the run decently last week against Breckenridge, allowing 156 yards on 33 carries.

The Panthers gave up a 25-yard pass on the first play of the second overtime that set up the game-winning point-after attempt.

“It was a punch in the stomach to play that hard and lose,” Gage said. “It was a good game, and we had our chances.”

Penalties hurt the Panthers. Paradise had 18 penalties for 160 yards.

“We had way too many penalties,” Gage said. “On their long drive, we had three major penalties. In the first overtime, we had an illegal procedure that forced us to settle for a field goal.”

The Panthers did throw for a season-high 216 yards. Mitchell Sellers caught six passes for 100 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown with four seconds left in regulation.

“Because we run the ball so much, people don’t realize we work on the passing game every day,” Gage said. “We have legitimate threats in the passing game. Mitchell is hard to match up with.”
