Football: Northwest picks up first district win

The Northwest Texans ended their two-game slide and picked up their first District 6-5A victory, beating Saginaw 45-14.

Prince Mavula threw for 406 yards, completing 35 of his 24 attempts. He connected with touchdown passes of 12 and 39 yards to Quentin Lee. He added scoring throws of 8 to DeVeantae Stegall and 33 yards to Chris Thomas.

For good measure, Mavula gained 122 yards on the ground, including an 81-yard scoring run.


The Bowie Jackrabbits scored late in the first quarter on a 15-yard pass by Matthew Wallace to Payton Price and never trailed en route to a 34-20 win over Boyd (2-4) in the 4-3A Division I opener Friday.

Wallace threw for three touchdowns and ran for two. He finished with 105 yards rushing and threw for 124, completing 12 of his 19 attempts.

Boyd added a late touchdown with Kody Risenhoover hitting Brian Couture from nine yards out. Risenhoover finished 10-for-20 for 132 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.


The Chico Dragons (3-4) managed only 103 yards of offense and turned the ball over four times in a 34-0 loss to Seymour Friday in their 5-2A Division I opener.

Seymour took a 28-0 lead in the first quarter with quarterback Cade Holden scoring on a 6-yard run and hitting Garrett Seigert with a 36-yard touchdown pass.


The Graham Steers scored in every quarter Friday, including 28 in the first, on the way to a 62-7 win over the visiting Bridgeport Bulls (1-6).

The District 3-4A Division II opening game featured seven touchdown passes from Tucker Horn – three of which were caught by Cameron Parker. Two rushing touchdowns finished the scoring onslaught. Graham had a total of 543 yards of offense on the night.

Bridgeport’s lone score came on the ground when Jadon Maddux found the goal line from 5 yards out and Milton Iniguez kicked the PAT.
