Football: Dragons face different challenge

The Chico Dragons faced a high-flying aerial attack from Bells last week in a 56-20 loss.

The Dragons this week must prepare to face the opposite end of the offensive spectrum against the Santo Wildcats.

Santo ran for 449 yards last week in a 49-28 victory over Rio Vista. Destin Montelongo ran for 215 yards and four touchdowns.

“They are going to run the football a lot,” said Chico coach Lane Wilson.

“They are a good 2A football team. We have to stop the run, sustain offensive drives and not beat ourselves.”

Through two games, the Chico rushing defense has been solid. They held Perrin to well under 100 yards in the opener. Last week, Bells ran for 75.

“Our run defense has been pretty good. We have to do a better job of covering the pass,” Wilson said.

Bells quarterback Bryan Ponder threw for 509 yards.

Offensively, Chico moved the ball on Bells, but failed to finish drives due to turnovers and penalties. Chico had 373 total yards.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” Wilson said.

Jerod Blanks finished with 153 yards rushing. He has 272 yards on the ground in two games.
