Decatur guard Ty Watson never gave up a sack in 2017.

Along with protecting quarterback Wilson Hicks, Watson also helped running back A.J. Martinez rush for 1,369 yards and 18 touchdowns. As a result, Watson earned a second-team selection on the Associated Press 4A team on Tuesday.

Hicks also earned honorable mention all-state honors.

Watson graded out at 95 percent and notched 41 pancake blocks while helping Decatur reach the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

“I take a ton of pride in not letting anyone touch Wilson,” Watson said. “All five guys took major pride in ‘don’t let our quarterback get hurt.'”

Watson was part of an offense that, along with throwing the ball around 35 times per game, put up a ton of points. During Decatur’s five-game winning streak at the end of the season and into the playoffs, the Eagles averaged more than 60 points per game.

Decatur also averaged 502.8 yards per game on the season to go along with 337.7 passing yards per game.

“It’s really awesome to get this award,” Watson said. “I think it’s awesome that our team was very successful. That’s the only reason I’m successful. Because our team was successful.”

Watson currently plans on attending Oklahoma State University upon graduating high school in the spring, and wants to become a teacher and football coach. Watson said although he currently does not have plans on playing football after high school, he would be open to playing at the collegiate level.

“I’d definitely like to work my way up and see how systems are run across the state,” Watson said. “I’d like to work into maybe [becoming] a head coach or athletic director later in my career.”
