The Decatur Eagles will face a big challenge as they begin district play Friday when they take on one of the best teams in the state.

Decatur will travel to Argyle for a clash with the unbeaten and third-ranked Eagles at 7 p.m.

Both teams are coming off bye weeks, so they’ve had plenty of time to get their game plans in order for the match-up.

For Decatur, the team focused on getting back to the basics, Decatur coach Mike Fuller said.

“We focused a lot on fundamentals, getting back to basics,” he said. “At the same time, we started in on the game plan last week.”

That game plan will include finding a way to attack a defense that is giving up less than two touchdowns per game on average.

“They play a different style of defense we’ve only seen from them and Graham a few years back,” Fuller said.

Argyle is coming off a 27-7 win at Paris on Sept. 29 while Decatur is coming off their big 61-28 win over rival Bridgeport two weeks ago which improved their record to 3-2 on the year.

But with the start of district play, the record from here on out to the end of the season is what’s most important.

“This is a big week. It’s always nice to get into district games where it really counts,” Fuller said.

Argyle’s offense is led by quarterback Jon Copeland, who transferred from Liberty Christian last spring. He’s thrown for 17 touchdowns in his team’s first five games.

Fuller said his team had a good week last week preparing for their match-up, and he feels they have a good game plan, even though they know the challenges ahead.

“They’re a really good team, the defending district champions, undefeated,” he said. “We’ve got some challenges with injuries we’re trying to overcome.”
