Football: Bulldogs hope to end slide

The Alvord Bulldogs suffered more growing pains last Friday.

A pair of safeties and a fumble in the end zone helped the Sacred Heart Tigers blank the Bulldogs 45-0.

Through two games, the Bulldogs have yet to reach the end zone.

“We moved the ball at times and then something catastrophic would happen,” said Alvord coach Pete Hart. “The kids are learning how to handle situations. It’s a long process with this many young kids. We need to learn to be consistent.

“The most important thing is they are learning each week. The kids are positive and as coaches we’re remaining positive.”

The Bulldogs will try to break through this week against another team that has struggled to start the season, Era. The Hornets are also 0-2. The teams meet at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium Friday.

Era fell to Collinsville 48-21 last week and Bells 54-8 in the opener.

“They are OK. I see a lot of us in them,” Hart said. “They have a lot of new kids in new spots with a new coach.”

Era has been lining up in the wishbone and power I in the first two weeks.

Defensively, the Bulldogs have tried to stay in games despite opponents working with a short field. Sacred Heart finished with 329 yards against Bulldogs.

“Defensively, we are playing well,” Hart said. “The scores are looking like it’s got out of hand, but that’s because of our mistakes.”
