A year after finishing a winless regular season, the Boyd Yellowjackets are now heading back to the playoffs.

Needing to win by 11 points last Friday night, the Yellowjackets stunned neighbor Paradise 29-13 to earn the final playoff berth out of District 4-3A Division I.

For a senior class that entered the season having never won a football game in middle school or on the varsity level, the accomplishment is nearly improbable.

“Friday was the third win of their career,” said Boyd coach Brandon Hopkins. “To make the playoffs and do it like they had to by winning by a certain number is not easy to do.”

Boyd (3-7) will now square off against District 3-3A Division I champion Comanche in the bi-district round of the 3A Region I Division I playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Granbury.

Comanche (9-1) went 5-0 and dominated 3-3A, outscoring its opponents 234-99. The Indians have won seven straight since a 25-24 loss to Cisco in the third game.

Senior Colton Roberts powers Comanche’s offense. He enters the postseason with 1,479 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Quarterback Bronte Hermesmeyer has added 743 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air.

“They are going to run it 85 percent of the time,” Hopkins said. “They are going to try to run it down our throat. We have to slow them down.”

Boyd had one of its best games of the season defensively last Friday, limiting Paradise to 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

“Defensively, we were able to make big stops,” Hopkins said.

Offensively, Boyd quarterback Kody Risenhoover threw for 268 yards. The Yellowjackets also had 160 yards on the ground.

“We made big plays and were able to mix it up and throw early in series,” Hopkins said. “We had three guys carry the ball right around 50 yards. It was a good night.”

Facing Comanche, the Yellowjackets know they are big underdogs. But they are not running from the challenge.

“We like our chances to go over there and compete. Anything can happen,” Hopkins said.

“This gives us another week of work with the young kids and shows that hard work pays off.”
