Since starting over the summer, the Boyd Yellowjackets have built their training around being prepared for the hills of Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock for the Region I meet.

Saturday, the Yellowjackets get a preview of the course a month ahead of the region meet, running in the Lubbock Invitational.

“The kids know it’s a big meet and they want to do well,” said Boyd coach Oscar Hernandez. “They want to show their hard work has not been for nothing.”

The Yellowjackets broke into the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas 3A boys poll this week at No. 10 after wins in the 4A-and-under races at Decatur’s Assault on Eagle Summit and the Paschal Invitational.

The Yellowjackets are not putting a lot of emphasis on the ranking with the focus on the upcoming championship portion of the season.

“There’s no more excuses. We’ve got to break through at the big meets,” Hernandez said.

Boyd will not be at full strength Saturday. Manny Garcia, who also is the place-kicker for the football team, did not make the trip. Blake Rodgers is running in his place after breaking 20 minutes in a junior varsity race last week.

“It’s a chance for Colton [Lawson] and others to step up,” Hernandez said. “I’m really interested in how our fifth and sixth guys pick it up.”

The Yellowjackets will run at 2:30 p.m., the same slot as the regional meet.

The Boyd girls will also run in the 3A race this weekend. The Lady Yellowjackets finished second at Paschal last week.

“Our top four girls have been running really well,” Hernandez said.
