Cross Country: Richardson tackles hills for victory

Throughout the summer and the fall workouts, hill training and getting ready to attack the climbs awaiting at the Region I championships in Lubbock have been the focus of Connor Richardson and his Boyd teammates.

If Saturday’s race at the Assault of Eagle Summit was any indication, Richardson and the team are on the right track.

Richardson cruised through the hills in the final mile-plus to record his first career victory in the 4A-and-under race. Richardson finished the 5K in 18:15.

“It’s all I had,” Richardson said. “This course is crazy. It’s good to know we can do well on this type of course. I’m so looking forward to Lubbock.”

Boyd runners finished first through third, rolling to a 33-point win with just 29 points. Gauge Fahlin took second in 18:29 and Tristan Lemasters third in 18:36.

Manny Garcia ran 19:17 for ninth and Colton Lawson 19:58 for 16th. Lucas Loya was 28th in 20:55.

The Decatur JV finished second with 62 points. Anthony Rodriguez ran 19:24 for 10th. Lenin Blanco was 11th in 19:25, Jonathan Mendez 12th in 19:25, Cameron Hale 14th in 19:43, Ryan Hubbard 20th in 20:16, Dominic Gross 23rd in 20:29 and Dimitri Gilbert 31st in 21:02.

Slidell was fifth with 150 points. Hunter Horner ran 19:34 for 13th. Carlos Gonzalez finished 27th in 20:53, Ben McCasland 35th in 21:13, Dillon Fortune 37th in 21:21, Brock Harwell 50th in 22:17 and Noe Villarreal 69th in 27:07.
