The annual Reunion Run returns to Joe Wheeler Park in Decatur Saturday and will usher in the start of the championship season.

The race will be the final event for the Decatur and Bridgeport runners before the 9-4A championships on the course Oct. 11.

“[The season] has gone by so fast,” said Decatur coach David Park. “We still have some people battling for spots, but it’s starting to define itself.”

Hundreds of runners will converge on the park with 32 high school teams and 20 middle schools competing. The event starts with the 5A/6A girls 5K at 8 a.m. followed by the 5A/6A boys. The junior varsity races for the big schools will be held before the 4A-and-under high school races.

Azle, Chisholm Trail, Weatherford and Frisco Lone Star will be among the big schools in the field. Strong teams from Marietta, Okla. and Valley View will also be competing.

All of 9-4A, with the exception of the Argyle girls and the Sanger teams, will be at Reunion, providing a preview for the district championships.

Decatur took last week off after a strong finish at the Denton Guyer Prowl The Park Sept. 16. The Decatur girls, ranked No. 1 in the latest 4A Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas poll, took the top 10 spots at the race.

Decatur will run in the 4A-and-under 3,200-meter race Saturday.

“We need to get used to the distance,” Park said.

The Decatur boys, ranked No. 2 in the latest poll, will run in the 5A/6A 5K.

The Bridgeport boys are ranked No. 8 in the poll.
