Going into Saturday’s Reunion Run, Alan Rangel set one goal – win.

The Decatur senior ran away from Alvarado’s Aaron Sevetlecic in the second mile and cruised to the 17-second victory on the 5K course at Joe Wheeler Park. Rangel turned in a 16:13.

“I was finally able to win. I’ve been trying since middle school,” said Rangel about the hometown race. “I was glad to win it for the first time my senior year.”

Rangel’s victory led Decatur to the win in the 6A/5A division with 38 points. The Eagles finished 20 points ahead of Azle with 58 in their final tuneup before the District 9-4A championship on the same course.

Early in the race, Rangel tried to pace off Sevetlecic. The duo went through the first mile in 4:58.

“I thought he was going at a good pace. Then I got skeptical about his pace,” Rangel said.

Before the race’s midpoint, Rangel made the pace and continued to pull away. He went through the two-mile point at 10:26 with a sizable lead.

Urged on by the hometown crowd, Rangel entertained the notion of making a run at sub-16. But with a sore hip, he said he eased through the final mile to the finish line.

“Coach [David] Park said I could do a sub-16, but I did what I could do,” Rangel said. “I felt like my hip was going to pop out. I did what I could do to be comfortable.”

Rangel was one of four Decatur runners to break 17 minutes. Gabe Embree ran 16:51 for eighth. Sergio Sanchez turned in a 16:53 for 10th and Triston Read 16:56 for 11th.

Christian Isaac was the fifth Eagle in 17:04.
