Splashing through the mud and puddles Friday morning, Maddie Mitschke didn’t fret about the conditions or the pain from sprinting through the hilly two-mile course in Haltom City.

Mitschke’s thoughts stayed with others, including late classmate Nick Rhodes and a teacher battling cancer, Stacey Webb.

“Last year, I was having trouble finding motivation,” Mitschke said. “This year with a kid in my class passing away and a teacher battling cancer, I’m running for them; because they can’t. I wanted to give it my all for them, the town and my team.”

Mitschke finished seventh in 14:16, leading Paradise to a fourth-place finish. Paradise piled up 119 points. Castleberry won the meet with 34.

“It was a good start to the year. They ran hard and got after it,” said Paradise coach Karin Essig.

She praised her team’s compassion for others.

“They are great kids. They show there’s always something to share when there’s nothing left to give,” Essig said. “They have them in their minds and have them in their hearts obviously. They run for each other and love to run for others.”

Hannah Beth Pearson finished 15th in 14:32. Kaycee Martin took 19th in 14:41. Allyson Black was 31st in 15:16. Rose Powers crossed the finish line in 54th as the fifth Paradise runner in 15:58.

Boyd took 13th as a team with 332 points. Kristain Bowen ran 15:01 for 25th. Georgie Tullos was 44th in 15:37. Abby Hays took 80th in 17:22, Emma Clark 109th in 19:02 and Sabrina Johns 117th in 19:59.
