Slidell’s Hunter Horner made a late charge to move up to 16th in the Class A Region III race Monday at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.

His late kick ensured him a spot back into the state field at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships Nov. 4 in Round Rock.

Horner finished the 5K in 18:40.

“I’m ready to get another shot at that course,” Horner said.

Horner was hoping his late charge would be enough to help the Greyhounds advance as a team. Slidell fell short of that goal, finishing seventh with 194 points.

Priddy grabbed the final state berth with 170. Blum was fifth with 186 and Graford sixth with 191.

“With 400 left, I took off and was trying to score some points for the team,” Horner said.

Dillon Fortune was 34th in 19:33. Easton Vanover took 47th in 19:51, Ben McCasland 56th in 20:23 and Carlos Gonzalez 60th in 20:34.

PARKER EARNS STATE BID

Alvord’s Colton Parker changed his race strategy for the 2A Region II race Monday.

He paced himself through the first mile and then started to charge up through the field in the second. The strategy earned him a state spot.

Parker finished 15th in 18:43.

“I tried something different. I waited and back in the woods, I caught a lot of people and finished strong,” Parker said.

“I worked hard all year and kept getting better and better.”

Alvord finished 12th as a team with 342 points.

EDGETT GARNERS 33RD

Paycee Edgett claimed to have reluctantly joined the cross country team at Alvord.

But the Lady Bulldog senior turned in a solid effort in her final race to finish 33rd in 13:35 in the 3,200-meter event.

“I didn’t mean to run cross country. Coach [Michael] Barnes said I had to,” Edgett said with a smile.

“I feel I ran good. I was about 10 seconds slower than district. We also ran this course three weeks ago in the pouring rain.”
