In her final race on the hills around Decatur High School, Taylor Butler cruised into the finish line to complete a 19-second victory.

While the Decatur senior made her tour around the Assault of Eagle Summit look easy, she quickly corrected that suggestion.

“No, that wasn’t easy. That last mile was killer,” Bulter said. “There’s a difference from hill training than racing on the hills. I guarantee this is one of the hardest meets.”

Bulter crossed the finish line on the 5K course in the 6A/5A race in 20:51. Lewisville senior Claire Marrone took second in 21:10.

Behind Butler, the Lady Eagles claimed the title in the largest division at the meet with 33 points – nine better than Denton Guyer. Lewisville was third with 48.

“It’s our home course. We have to defend it,” Butler said.

On the tough 5K course with the big climbs in the final half of the race, Butler jumped in the lead early and took an 11-second advantage heading into the hills. Her lead only grew after the big climbs of Eagle Summit, leaving her alone to sprint across the practice field to the finish line.

“I wanted to try to build a lead going into the hills and hold on,” Butler said. “I didn’t feel like 15 seconds coming out of the hills. I felt like I was jogging.”

Fellow Decatur senior Elizabeth Culpepper took third in 21:26. Kayla Leal finished sixth in 22:27 and Makenzie Fox eighth in 22:31. Salma Pena was the Lady Eagles’ fifth runner in 23:50.

Vanessa Sanders ran 24:23 for 20th and Parker Johnson 24:31 for 21st.

In the 4A-and-under girls race on the 3,200-meter course, the Decatur JV finished fifth with 123 points. Audri Baber was 20th in 14:41, Quinn Helm 28th in 14:57, Enycia Fernandez 32nd in 15:11, Emily Hubbard 37th in 15:24, Elizabeth Warren 38th in 15:27 and Leigh Ann Sitzman 50th in 16:09.

Boyd took sixth as a team led by Carrie Schwartz, who finished fifth in 13:44. Kristain Bowen ran 14:08 for 10th. Georgie Tullos was 26th in 14:55, Emma Clark 61st in 16:51 and Sabrina Johns 70th in 18:21.

Slidell was ninth with 246 points. Sydney Keating finished 53rd in 16:25. Maddie Meyer ran 16:32 for 57th, Bailey Meyer 17:50 for 68th, Jayden Ellison 19:49 for 71st, Ashley Mayabb 21:19 for 73rd and Jenny Licea 24:17 for 74th.
