The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets’ domination in district reached a new milestone Saturday.
Led by a diverse attack, the Lady Yellowjackets rolled to their 30th straight league victory, sweeping rival Paradise, 25-10, 25-15, 25-11.
Boyd’s streak dates back to the middle of the 2015 season when junior Jordyn Todd, who powered down 12 kills against the Lady Panthers, was a freshman.
“It’s awesome. It’s so much fun to play with [this team],” Todd said. “It’s Coach [Dusty] Crafton and the way she runs practices. We never let up ever.”
Boyd moved to 7-0 at the halfway point of District 8-3A this season.
“I know how talented we are and [the streak] isn’t a huge deal that we’re focusing on,” Crafton said. “It says a lot about them and what winning means to them.”
Paradise dropped to 1-6 in district.
“We were outmanned today,” said Paradise coach Danny Anderson. “We’ll continue to work. We start the second half Tuesday. We have seven games left to do the best we can. We’re only two games out of fourth place.”
With gritty defensive play, Paradise tried to slow the Boyd attack. But Boyd’s varied attackers kept Paradise from mounting any offense. Paradise finished with just 16 kills. Saylea Mayfield landed six and Ashley Kosman four.
“We couldn’t get passes to hitters,” Anderson said.
With setters Tori Pellegrini and Macey McCune lining up shots from various points, six different Boyd hitters landed kills. Pellegrini handed out 16 assists and McCune 14.
“We have a lots of weapons and when our setters are on, it’s pretty volleyball,” Crafton said. “It’s exciting to have a lot of options.”
Jacey Cate buried nine kills, attacking from the middle. Cate put down four kills and recorded a block in the Lady Yellowjackets’ 17-3 closing run.
Boyd went on long runs in all three sets. Boyd had an 11-0 run in the opening game and followed it up with an 8-0 spurt to end the second set.
