The Boyd Yellowjackets continued their hot start to the season over the weekend, routing Wichita Falls Notre Dame, Forestburg and Prairie Valley to win the Chico Invitational.

Led in scoring by Blake Rodgers, who averaged 20.7 points per game during the tournament, the Yellowjackets moved to 7-2 on the year.

Boyd has won its last six games.

“Our guys are excited,” said Boyd coach Jacob Hines. “They’re confident, and that’s the biggest key for us.”

Boyd has not lost a game in nearly two weeks, downing Windthorst, Seymour and Alvord before taking home the Chico Invitational title.

The Yellowjackets have averaged 65 points per game during the winning streak, with multiple players contributing offensively. Hines has been particularly impressed with the play of point guard Reuben Rodebaugh, who is Boyd’s primary facilitator.

“I’ve been pleased with [the ball movement],” Hines said. “We’re doing a good job of moving the ball, changing sides of the floor and getting everyone involved. [Rodebaugh] does a really good job of dictating that. He has a good feel of when it’s time for him to score or when to pass.”

While Hines is encouraged by his team’s 7-2 mark, he still insists there is work to be done, particularly on the defensive glass. Hines said his team has given up too many offensive rebounds this year, resulting in second and third chances for the opposition.

“I always tell them it has to be a habit that’s formed,” Hines said. “We have to form that habit in practice. Every time a shot goes up all five guys are looking to box somebody out.”

Boyd has four games remaining before opening of District 8-3A play Dec. 20 against Paradise.
