The Slidell Greyhounds took over first place in District 21-A Friday and could wrap up the league title Tuesday with a victory over Forestburg.
Slidell’s 72-50 win over Saint Jo coupled with Forestburg’s second straight loss put the Greyhounds alone atop the 21-A standings at 10-1.
Slidell, who lost the initial meeting with Forestburg Feb. 20, needed a win Tuesday to secure the league title, the top playoff seed and a bye into the area round of the Class A Region III playoffs.
“For the program, it would be a good step,” said Slidell coach Todd McCormick about playing for the league title. “Since the beginning of the year, it’s been the first goal.”
Slidell headed into the showdown at 21-9 and on a five-game winning streak. Friday’s win followed a familiar trend with three different players in double figures. Colton Crane led the way with 18 points. Shelby Johnson had 12 and Walker Gladden 10.
The team’s leading scorer for the season, Layton Shelton, had nine points with five assists.
Slayton Pruett grabbed seven boards to go along with nine points.
“We’re pretty deep. We’ve had guys all the way through and down to the JV that have stepped in and helped,” McCormick said. “We’re pretty well-rounded, and everyone has been ready when called upon.”
Slidell took a double-digit halftime lead on Saint Jo, 39-27. The Greyhounds pulled away by outscoring the Panthers 17-4 in the third.
The Greyhounds shot 47 percent in the game and outrebounded Saint Jo by 14.
