Monday morning the Decatur Eagles held the first practice with their entire squad in the fold after the end of the football playoffs.

The Eagles will quickly prepare for a stretch of games with only a few practices. Following a Tuesday night game against Peaster, the Eagles will gear up for this week’s Decatur Invitational that starts Thursday.

“The good thing is that the guys we are getting back have been in the program for three years,” said Decatur coach Drew Coffman.

The Eagles went 2-2 in their four games without Wilson Hicks, Dane Fitzgerald, Dylan Nation and Ethan Southard.

“I’m proud of the group we had. I felt like we were a playoff team,” Coffman said. “Adding those players, we could be a district champion. We won two games against good teams. We had eight players that had never been on varsity before.”

The Eagles will face a tough field in the tournament this weekend. Decatur is in Group 1 with Lorena, Aledo, Western Hills and Lubbock Trinity Christian. Decatur will play Western Hills at 11:30 a.m. and Aledo at 7 p.m. Thursday at Decatur High School. The Eagles face Lorena at 11:30 a.m. and Lubbock Trinity Christian at 7 p.m. Friday.

Bracket play will be held Saturday.

The tournament also includes Weatherford, Bowie, Eaton, Frisco Wakeland, Coppell, Odessa and Odessa Permian.

“It’s as good of a 4A tournament as any,” Coffman said. “Coppell, Odessa Permian and Odessa are good 6A teams. Lubbock Trinity Christian won the tournament last year.”

Games will be held at both gyms at Decatur High School and the two gyms at McCarroll Middle School Thursday through Saturday. Along with the varsity tournament are junior varsity and freshmen divisions.
