With their second loss to Holliday to start the second half of District 8-3A play, the Paradise Panthers found themselves at .500 and on the outside of the playoff picture.

Senior pitcher Brysen Meyers said that’s when the team held a meeting that turned their season around.

“We started taking it more serious,” Meyers said. “The situational hitting improved and that’s contagious.”

The Panthers went 4-2 over their final six games and clinched the fourth and final playoff spot out of 8-3A with an 11-5 victory over Bowie Friday.

“They stepped up in big situations,” said Paradise coach Nick Pike. “We had to win three of our last four to get in.”

The Panthers wanted to make sure to keep the recent string of playoff appearances going.

“We didn’t want to be the guys to end the streak,” said senior Brad Young. “We have high expectations.”

Paradise will face a tough challenge to start the playoffs, meeting No. 4 Brock, the 7-3A champions, in a bi-district series. Games one and two start at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Weatherford College. Game three, if necessary, will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in Jacksboro.

The Panthers fell to Brock 1-0 at the Brock Tournament March 9. Young allowed a run on three hits in the game.

“They are really good,” Young said. “They have a couple of guys that can stroke the ball.”

Meyers said the Panthers will need to be sharp in every aspect against Brock.

“The little mistakes that we got away with in district, we can’t have against a team like Brock,” Meyers said.

Against Bowie Friday, Paradise scored seven runs in its final two at-bats to rally and put the game away.

Patrick Dorado’s two-run single in the sixth put Paradise up 6-5. Young then followed with a RBI-single.

Paradise added four in the seventh.

Jace Essig went 2-for-3, drove in two runs and scored twice.
