Hello, Wise County!

My name is Reece Waddell, and I’m the Wise County Messenger’s new sports editor. Some of you may have seen a few of my bylines over the past few months, and if you have, I hope you enjoyed what you read.

A little about myself. I’m 22 years old and was born and raised in North Richland Hills. I attended Richland High School, graduating in 2014. I then went to the University of North Texas for three-and-a-half years, graduating this past weekend with my bachelor’s degree in digital and print journalism.

While at UNT, I served as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, The North Texas Daily, and worked for The Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV, as well.

Some things you should know: I’m a tortured Dallas/Fort Worth sports fan. If you want to talk about Game 6 of the 2011 World Series and how Nelson Cruz shouldn’t have been in right field, swing by the office. If you want to relive the sadness that was the 2006 NBA Finals, let’s meet up and have a chat.

And if you see me use the hashtag “Dez caught it” on Twitter, just know I’m still not over that, either.

While I may be a passionate fan, I want you to know I intend to bring that same passion and energy to my writing and coverage of your favorite Wise County teams. I’ve been around sports since I was born, as my dad was a high school basketball coach. He used to tell me if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

So as far as I’m concerned, I’m still waiting to experience what a full day’s work feels like.

Part of that is because I love what I do, and part is because of the great people I work with. Since I arrived back in October, every coach, parent and school official I’ve interacted with has been nothing but helpful and accommodating. All of you have made my job a breeze and been incredibly welcoming to the new guy.

I’d also like to extend a hearty thank you to Roy Eaton, Kristen Tribe and Richard Greene for giving me the opportunity to work at a top-notch publication like the Messenger. They have been tremendous in the short time that I have been here, as has the rest of the Messenger newsroom.

Get ready, Wise County. We’re about to go on an all-out sports journey filled with thrilling victories, crushing defeats and eye-popping upsets. I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

Reece Waddell is the sports editor at the Messenger, and is still getting over all of the heartbreak DFW teams have caused him over the years.
